This Saturday, Vaivara vald, Sinimäed (Blue Hills). Veterans of Estonian Division [20th Waffen Grenadier Division (Estniche Nr. 1)] of the Waffen-SS gather to remember one of the fiercest battles of the whole WWII - Soviets attempted to get a hold of the Grenader Hill, which they obviously failed. This battle happened on the July 29th, 1944This - keeping the Narva bridgehead and then 3 hills of Sinimäed, was as bad as it got. But when the Soviets had moved hundreds of kilometers elsewhere, there they sat still for 8 months and suffered many casualties (people talk about at least 200 000 to over half a million Soviet KIA-s).
The whole Estonian Legion and the events then are worth a long post, when I have enough time it will come. But in the meanwhile, Wikipedia is an acceptable source. But as said, the Legion was able to keep the enemy standind still, which meant that the Soviets had to pour in additional forces, depleting their ability to fight effectivly in the Finland, thus the Finland was never occupied and enforced their status as a free and independent country. Also, stalling the enemy at our north-eastern border meant that over 80 000 refugees were able to get to safety.
Sad I can't attend to this remembering this time, but I do raise a glass and light a candle for those who are not here.
Sad is that the "Notšnoi pozor" and "nashi" red faschists want to put bad light to the event, but spreading their lies and red propaganda, thus stirring up trouble. One of the organizers is Zarenkov, already under a keen surveillance by The Security Police Board (KaPo).
Especially as the neo-nazi scum also wants to hang out there and boasting off something they don't have - the guts, courage and will of sacrifice the true legionnaires had and have. Friggin wannabes. There weren't only Estonians fighting there, this side was shared with Germans, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, Dutchmen, Belgians
The documental movie: Sinimäed (in Estonian only, broken into 6 parts). It's a forceful story and a fresh alternative to new Russian attemps to look at the history their way.
This is also a proper place to remember the warcrimes our own, communist led Riflemen Corps commited - church of Avinurme for example.
Thought of the day:
Raivo Kalamäe writes in his mémoires: "They (soviet punishment battalion) had killed a whole family near Sooru and staked an infant on the picket fence, as the head of the family didn't want to give up any animals nor horses."
