16 years of being free again

20.08.1991 it was declared out that our country is again a free and independent Republic Of Estonia - that the freedom which was interrupted by occupation for half a century was reestablished. It was interesting times, as the process wasn't exactly painful - Soviet Union had a hard time letting us go, even sent out troops to make us reconsider and there were attacks on our border posts.

Humanly and ethically it was good that there were no casualties. Politically and tactically a small bunch of KIAs would have given larger motivation and greater degree of patriotism today - the feeling that the freedom was fought for and paid for. Currently a lot of people think that we sang ourselves free. I've heard a lot of rumours, that this wasn't the case (also involving some force plays), but I won't repeat them here.

This year our country faced the war and a turn from democracy to tyranny. It was alot more closer to that than the press was admitting. So, with one try failed there will sure be anothers. We'll see what the situation will be, next year.
